EAST FARM SHOP MAY 2011
At East Farm shop we stock a wide range of local produce, with our main flagship being meat. The concept of the shop is to supply our local community with fresh local meat that has been reared to a very high standard. The meat is hung until it reaches the point when it becomes tender and then butchered in specific traditional cuts - thus providing that special mouth watering taste when it is prepared on the diner plate. Beef, pork and lamb are readily available from the shop and we also offer a personalised ordering service. Fresh free range poultry are reared by Creedy Carver at Crediton in Devon. These are very popular so you must be quick to avoid disappointment.
Our beef is produced either at East Farm, or from other local farms in the area. All beef is produced to the highest welfare standards. At East farm we operate under the CMI assurance scheme, however most British farmers are encouraged to rear livestock under similar schemes to help promote their produce. At East farm we currently rearing Limousin cross Holstein Friesian beef animals, these are finished at around 24mths old. They are reared outside on the chalkland pastures, and housed inside during the colder winter months. This system ensures that all the goodness from the surrounding chalkland pastures ends up flavouring our beef.
Our pork sold through the shop is sourced from Mr Maltby, Broadwindsor near Bridport. These landrace pigs are free range and are reared to RSPCA assurance standards. They are slaughtered locally at Charlie Goodland’s which is at Lye, Sherborne. From there they are butchered at Stourhead farmshop. Gloucester Old spot pigs are sourced from our neighbours Rebecca and James Hill at north Winterborne Kingston. They are reared outside in small groups, reaching weights of roughly 50 – 60kg dead weight.
Our lamb is produced by James Tory at Turnwoth Farm. James runs a pedigree flock of Dorset Down ewes that originate from the famous Randolph Tory flock. We also use other local farmers from the surrounding farms throughout the year.
As well as meat, we have a diverse range of award winning Dorset products, such as fruit and vegetables, dairy products, breads, jams, chutneys, pickles, crisps, ice creams and sorbets can be purchased. We grow quite a range of vegetables at the farm, including parsnips, carrots, runner beans, leeks, onions, turnips, rhubarb, broad beans, French beans, beet root and lettuces. Raspberries are also available from July onwards. We have won many prizes at the Dorset County show over the years.
From June onwards we offer East Farm cream teas, where you can enjoy a relaxing and peaceful English cream tea. Homemade scones are baked daily in the farmhouse, with a dollop of fresh clotted cream it is a definite must for all visiting the area. The menu is varied and extensive guaranteeing something for all that visit.
